Primary Research
Because my project is about my disability and lockdown, I
have decided that for my primary research I will do a 1:1 interview with my
mum, as she knows all about me and my disability. I think this will help me
when I make my vlog, because my mum is my carer, and she has helped me
throughout my 20 plus years, going through problems with school hospital and
other things. My mum is very aware of my capabilities and what I struggle with
e.g. cooking, carrying heavy objects and going out and about. Interviewing my
mum helps me see my disability from a different perspective.
These are the results of the interview-
1. Did you think you may have a disabled child
when you were younger?
Yes, I did, when I was younger, when I was
about 15, I had a premonition that I would have a disabled child.
2. Did you understand disabilities before I
was born?
No I didn’t, but when I was younger I used
to look after and help with a disabled child, but that was the first encounter
I had with a disabled child.
3. How much advice was available when I was
born?
Very little, disability wasn’t really
talked about and it was difficult because there weren’t really the websites to
try and look up, it was only just sort of starting up, it’s only the last few
years that disability has become more of an awareness, and now you can find out
more things about disability whereas before you couldn’t.
4. How did other people react to you having a
child with disabilities?
Close friends and family were supportive
but people from outside were afraid to approach because they don’t want to hurt
your feelings.
5. Should more people understand that a
disability can make a person stronger?
People need to be more aware of disability
which is now coming forward, I think people are afraid of disability, and that
is why people should be more aware of it now, because you can still achieve
things even if you are disabled, and some times more than what a normal able
bodied person could be mentally or physically. Everybody has got something
within them that sparks.
6. What was the hardest thing, for you, about
raising me?
Trying to get the things in place for you
to support you, and trying to get people to understand that you’re happy.
7. When I was little did you know about vlogs
etc.?
No, there wasn’t anything like that, it’s
only recent years that you have had it.
8. How has seeing what I have achieved made
you feel?
Absolutely proud, happy, absolutely elated,
can’t be more prouder, absolutely love you to the moon and back, I can’t say it
in words anymore, because everything you have achieved has been fantastic.
My conclusions from this interview are that I am more
determined to make my vlog because my mum has given me more to think about. I
was interested to hear that people were afraid of disability, and this makes me
want to show people that there is nothing to be afraid of. I had a good idea
for my vlog, but after talking to my mum, I have some new ideas, because I
really want people to understand people with my disability.
