Primary Research Methods

Primary research methods;

In today's lesson, our teacher gave us a worksheet "primary research methods", we had to watch examples of clips of questionnaires, focus scripts, etc, we also had to write down the pros and cons of each example.

Questionnaires
The strengths of a questionnaire are; Its very easy to distribute them to people at college, work or neighborhood to get the response quickly.

The weakness of a questionnaire are; you can't ask long and complex questions, they have to be straight forward so the reader can understand them.

Focus groups
The strengths of Focus groups are; this means you can ask long and complex questions to get an in-depth response to the question. They can be tricky to analyze the data after as you will get different responses.

It can be difficult to encourage a range of people to participate.

The weakness of Focus groups are; its very time consuming as the person has to source a room, the people and creating the questions they can be hard to control and manage.

Interviews
The strengths of an interview are that you can ask more in-depth and personal questions of which you'll most likely, receive an in-depth answer.

The weaknesses of an interview is that it is very time consuming with what you're doing, as you need to source a client and come up with reasonable questions to ask.

Types of research

Audience research- This where I find out what my target audience is, what they want and like, and this will help to see if my target audience is correct. This can be done through focus groups, questionnaires, and research.

Market research- This is when I need to think about what the right time is, or if the time is the right for the market. Also, I need to look at the demands of the market when it's almost ready for release, and what competition there will be. Also, I need to be aware of how I will be able to sell my product.

Production research- This is a very crucial part of my research because I need to consider the issues around equipment, costs, time management/ personnel, legal issues, health and safety, and planning.

Importance of research in media production.
  • To make sure that the personnel is the correct people for their roles.
  • Planning needs to go smoothly otherwise the time management and costs will be impacted upon.
  • I need to make sure that my research is detailed, e.g. making certain that the client will be there at the time I want to record the footage and the interview.
  • I need to plan strategically on when to release my product.
  • To prevent potential problems and mistakes in production.
